3D PRINT AND GRAPHICS
Stereoscopic printing dates back to the 1850's. To that extent, it is a well understood process. Yet, there are a lot of examples of how not to do it. In it's simplest form, anaglyphic printing is a matter of taking two images (left and right eye views) and printing them in superimposition with one image in cyan (blue/green) ink, the other in red ink. Viewed without 3D glasses, the image looks "misregistered." With glasses, 3D!!!

THIS IS AN ANAGLYPH

The primary concerns are proper images and ink color specifications.

Many examples of anaglyph printing show a lack of understanding of parallax. The two images, when superimposed, are the same in some areas, different in others. This difference is known as parallax. Typically, the greater the parallax, the greater the 3D effect - in other words, the "deeper" the image. But the parallax needs to be controlled. Too much parallax is to be avoided. The key is to understand "how much."

The choice of ink color is crucial to effective anaglyphs. The best way is to specify PMS colors, and treat it as a two color run. But, especially in production printing (i.e. magazines), one is often limited to process ("CMYK") inks, which are a BIG problem.

We were the first to produce full color anaglyph print 3D, and while proud of the fact, have some reservations.

Here is an example of Color vs. B&W Anaglyphs.

More than 90% of the examples of process printing are, in our opinion, inferior. The bottom line to us is "customer satisfaction." That customer is the person viewing the printed 3D image. If the image has problems that distract from the pure thrill of the 3D, we feel it has failed.

D3 can provide unique services for the planning, production, and printing of 3D media. Our SpatialColor™ print system is the first coordinated 3D printing process in the world. We have the only professional, computerized camera system designed and built specifically for anaglyphic photo-print work.

We can convert most existing art work to 3D (much like the comic book image at the top of the page). We can create new art, specifically designed for the best 3D. Lastly, we can provide printing services or provide supervision of your printer of choice. We are highly flexible, and understand the varied needs of our clients.
